The festival of colours — Holika Dahan's cleansing fire, then a day of gulal and joy.
Significance
Holi celebrates the triumph of devotion over arrogance. The evening before, Holika Dahan recalls Prahlada — the child who would not stop chanting Vishnu's name — emerging unharmed from the fire that consumed Holika. The bonfire burns away the year's negativity.
The next morning belongs to colour. In Braj, Holi is inseparable from Krishna, who played it with the gopis of Vrindavan; his playful spirit is why rank and formality dissolve for a day as everyone is painted the same.
How it is celebrated
- Gather for Holika Dahan and circle the bonfire with prayers.
- Play with gulal and water from morning onwards.
- Prepare gujiya, thandai and festive sweets.
- Visit friends and family to exchange colours and forgiveness.
