Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, is the divine cowherd of Vrindavan, the beloved of devotees and the teacher of the Bhagavad Gita. His life — from butter-stealing child to guide of Arjuna — is itself scripture. Janmashtami, his midnight birth, is among the most joyous festivals of the year.
