Significance
Ram Navami celebrates the midday birth of Shri Ram, seventh avatar of Vishnu, to King Dasharatha and Queen Kaushalya of Ayodhya. It closes Chaitra Navratri, joining the worship of the Goddess to the arrival of maryada purushottam — the ideal of righteous living.
At noon, the hour of his birth, temples perform abhishek of the infant Ram; the Ramayana and Ram Raksha Stotra are recited, and in Ayodhya lakhs bathe in the Sarayu.
How it is celebrated
- Recite the Ram Chalisa, Ram Aarti or Ramayana passages.
- Perform the midday abhishek and cradle ceremony of infant Ram.
- Many observe a fast, broken after the noon puja.
- Join shobha yatras and kirtans of "Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram".
