Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganpati comes home — ten days of modaks, aartis and farewell by the water.
Significance
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Ganesh, the remover of obstacles. Clay murtis are welcomed home and into public pandals with Pranapratishtha, and for up to ten days the household rhythm turns around morning and evening aartis and offerings of modak — Ganpati's favourite.
The festival closes with visarjan: the murti is carried in procession — "Ganpati Bappa Morya, pudhchya varshi laukar ya!" — and immersed in water, a reminder that the Lord who arrives must also return, and will come again.
How it is celebrated
- Install a clay Ganesh murti at home with Pranapratishtha.
- Offer 21 modaks and durva grass; perform morning and evening aarti.
- Recite the Ganesh Aarti (Sukhkarta Dukhharta) and Sankat Nashan Ganesh Stotra.
- Join the visarjan procession on Anant Chaturdashi.
