The tenth day of victory — Ram's triumph over Ravana, and good over evil.
Significance
Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, closes Navratri with victory: Shri Ram's defeat of the ten-headed Ravana, and the Goddess's victory over Mahishasura. Effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Meghnad burn at sundown as crowds watch evil collapse in flame.
The day is considered supremely auspicious for beginnings — new ventures, first lessons, tools and instruments honoured in Ayudha Puja. In many homes, Shami leaves are exchanged as gold.
How it is celebrated
- Watch or stage Ramlila and the burning of Ravana's effigy.
- Recite the Ram Aarti or Ram Chalisa.
- Perform Ayudha/Shastra Puja — honour tools, vehicles and instruments.
- Begin new learning or ventures; exchange Shami leaves.
