Raksha Bandhan
The thread of protection — a sister's rakhi, a brother's vow.
Fri, 28 Aug 2026
Significance
On the full moon of Shravan, a sister ties a rakhi on her brother's wrist — a prayer for his long life — and the brother vows her his protection. The thread makes sacred what daily life leaves unsaid between siblings.
In coastal Maharashtra the same Purnima is Narali Purnima, when coconuts are offered to the sea god Varuna before the fishing season; in the north it is also the day of the janeu change, Shravani Upakarma.
How it is celebrated
- Sister performs aarti, applies tilak and ties the rakhi.
- Brother gives a gift and a vow of protection.
- Share sweets; many families begin the day with a small puja.
- By the sea, offer a coconut to Varuna (Narali Purnima).
