Mahakaal is Shiva as the lord of time and death, before whom even endings bow. His jyotirlinga at Ujjain — Mahakaleshwar — is famed for the dawn Bhasma Aarti, where the lord is adorned with sacred ash. He is invoked to conquer fear and untimely death.
