Durga is the invincible mother goddess, the embodiment of shakti who rode her lion into battle and slew the demon Mahishasura. She protects her devotees and destroys evil in every age. Navratri, celebrated twice a year, is devoted to her nine forms, with Durga Puja its grandest form in the east.
